Transfer admission may be granted in most fields of study to students who have earned credit hours from other regionally accredited colleges or universities. The University of Miami suggests that students follow a general liberal arts curriculum. Students at two-year colleges are encouraged to follow the Associate of Arts path.

At UM, the transfer of credits is a two-part process:

After the student has been admitted

  • Transcripts are reviewed on a course-by-course basis.
  • The student will receive a detailed transfer credit evaluation with any possible UM course equivalencies.

After arriving on campus

  • Students will meet with their academic advisors or departmental deans.
  • Advisors will determine how the transferable credits satisfy degree requirements and approve the course equivalencies.

Credits that will not be accepted

  • Credits taken at an institution that is not regionally accredited
  • Courses with a Grade Lower than C
  • Physical Education, Professional, or Technical Courses
  • The following credits completed through a Two-Year College: Study Abroad, Independent Study or Internships

Courses that have grades of C- or lower will not transfer; however, these grades will still be used to compute an admission grade point average. Math, foreign language, psychology, sociology, criminal justice, and history courses that are taken online will need approval from the UM department chair in order to award credits. For first-year writing courses, including English Composition, please contact the Department of Writing Studies.

Required Credit Hours in Residence at the University of Miami

The Transfer Credit policy applies to all admitted students, regardless of the number of transfer credits accepted by the university.

All students must meet the following requirements:

  • At least half (50%) of the credit hours required for the chosen major(s) or any minor(s) must be completed through the University of Miami.
    • Some programs/majors have more specific requirements for foundation coursework. While they may require more than 50%, they cannot require less than 50%.
  • Transfer work must have been taken within 10 years from the date of initial matriculation into a bachelor’s degree program at the University of Miami.
    • Some disciplines may require more recent course enrollment; if the discipline experiences more frequent advancements in research or knowledge, the department may require a student take a newer course.
  • All credits must have been earned at a regionally accredited institution, as stated above.
  • The final 45 credits toward a degree must be completed through the University of Miami.
    • If students have extenuating circumstances that prevent them from adhering to the residency requirement, an appeal can be initiated by following the appeal or waiver process determined by their college or school.
