The Ronald A. Hammond Scholarship, which honors the legacy of the University’s first director of minority affairs, is one of the premier scholarships available to students at the University of Miami.

Eligibility Criteria

In addition to the criteria listed below, eligible students are required to apply for Early Decision I or Early Action and must submit all First-Year Admission Requirements by the November 1 deadline.

Residency

Open only to U.S. Citizens and U.S. Permanent Residents.

Portrait of a Hammond Scholar

The Hammond Scholarship is awarded to high school seniors who, through evaluation of their application and supporting documents, demonstrate academic prowess, embrace diversity and inclusivity, and are steadfastly committed to community by creating a culture of belonging. Preference will be given to first generation students.

How to Nominate an Applicant

School counselors may nominate an applicant or applicants they feel match the Portrait of a Hammond Scholar.

Current and former Hammond Scholars may also nominate an applicant or applicants they feel match the Portrait of a Hammond Scholar.

Selection Process

The scholarship is awarded to high school seniors based on a thorough evaluation of their application and supporting documents.

Recipients of the Hammond Scholarship will be invited to participate in the University of Miami's scholarship program, which will be held in the spring. During this program, candidates will meet with UM faculty and current scholars and learn more about our interest-driven education.

Terms & Conditions

A Hammond Scholar must complete a full-time undergraduate program of study with no fewer than 12 credit hours during each of the fall and spring semesters for a minimum of 24 credit hours per academic year. A minimum of a 3.0 GPA for the academic year must be maintained at the University of Miami, with the initial calculation at the end of the second semester of attendance. The award is subject to revision pending receipt of any grant, scholarship, or prepaid tuition and/or housing aid not anticipated at the time the award is made.
