Undergraduate admission counselors use a holistic process to review each applicant, carefully considering and contextualizing a student’s academic record, extracurricular activities, including community involvement and work, personal statement, and test scores.

Test Optional through Spring 2026

Prospective students who apply for Fall 2025 and Spring 2026 may choose whether or not to self-report their test scores. If they choose to self-report their test scores on the Common Application, they may designate whether or not they wish to have those test scores used in the holistic review process. Applicants will not be required to self-report test scores on the Common Application.

Prospective Fall 2025 and Spring 2026 transfer applicants with fewer than 30 postsecondary credits at the time of their application who do not submit ACT and/or SAT scores will be required to submit the supplemental essay. (see below)

Test Scores Required for Fall 2026

The University of Miami will once again require prospective students to include standardized test scores as part of their undergraduate admission application beginning with students applying to enter the University in the Fall 2026 semester.

Applicants can self-report test scores on the Common Application. Only those students who are admitted and choose to enroll at UM will be required to submit official scores from the testing agencies.

The following populations may still choose whether to apply to UM with or without test scores:

  • First-year and transfer applicants applying to performance-based academic programs, including performance majors in the Frost School of Music*
  • First-year and transfer applicants applying to portfolio-based academic programs, including all majors in the School of Architecture
  • First-year applicants who will graduate from a high school/secondary school outside of the United States.
  • Transfer applicants who will have earned 30 or more postsecondary credits at the time of application submission.

*All performance majors in the Frost School must audition as part of their application process.
†Only those students who apply to the School of Architecture without test scores are required to submit a portfolio as part of their application process.

Supplemental Essay

All first-year applicants, regardless of application term, will be required to submit a 250 word supplemental essay that focuses on resilience with the Common Application.
