Does the University of Miami offer merit scholarships?

Yes, UM awards merit scholarships to incoming undergraduate students based on their academic achievements regardless of their citizenship. The criteria for awarding merit scholarships are based on a comprehensive review of the applicant pool each year. To view our different academic scholarships, visit our Scholarships page.

How do I apply for UM merit scholarships?

There is no separate application required; applicants are automatically considered for an academic scholarship when they apply for admission to UM.

Does applying Early Decision impact my likelihood of receiving a merit scholarship?

No, applying under the Early Decision I or II deadline is neither an advantage nor a disadvantage in the merit scholarship selection process.

When will I hear if Ive been awarded a merit scholarship?

Academic scholarships for both freshmen and transfer students are determined at the time of acceptance, regardless of admission plan. Incoming first-year students who apply under the Early Decision I and Early Action notification plans are automatically eligible for our Premier Scholarships. Those notifications will go out late March.

I have received a merit scholarship. How do I accept it?

Congratulations! Be sure to complete the following steps to accept your award:

  • Carefully review your scholarship agreement.
  • Sign, scan, and send the agreement to the Office of Student Financial Assistance and Employment via fax to 305-284-4082 or email to mydocuments@miami.edu with the subject line "Scholarship Agreement"

Please note that you must complete this agreement in order to receive the scholarship; however, it is not a binding commitment to attend UM.

I have received a merit scholarship. Is it possible to increase the amount?

No, all of our scholarship decisions are final. If you find that your family’s financial circumstances have changed and additional financial assistance is needed, we recommend that you contact the Office of Student Financial Assistance and Employment to determine your eligibility for need-based financial assistance.

If I receive a merit scholarship from UM, may I also receive need-based financial assistance?

Yes, a scholarship recipient may still qualify for need-based assistance. To apply for financial aid, complete and submit the required financial aid applications with any supporting documents by the stated deadline. Please note that merit scholarships are considered resources and may affect financial need per federal regulations and University policy.

May I use some of my merit scholarship funds to cover room and board expenses?

Most UM scholarships cover tuition only. Only a few select Premier Scholarships cover room and board. If you have other tuition-restricted funds such as the Florida Resident Access Grant or Tuition Remission, then the total of all these funds combined are limited to tuition and fee expenses only.

If I decide to take a gap year, will I be able to keep my scholarship?

No, an awarded scholarship will not be held over to a later semester(s). Depending on when you choose to enroll, you will be reconsidered with the following semester or year’s applicant pool.

Will UM match other scholarships offered by another institution?

No, we do not match offers made by other colleges/universities, but we congratulate you on your academic achivements that have provided so many wonderful opportunities.

Can I qualify for merit scholarships in subsequent years if I did not receive one as an incoming student?

No, the Office of Undergraduate Admission awards scholarships only at the time of admission. We encourage students to apply for outside scholarships for subsequent years. For more information, visit our Additional Scholarship Resources page.

My classmate received a merit scholarship from UM but is not planning to attend. May I use it?

No, we do not re-award scholarships that are not accepted by the original recipient.

Does UM offer National Merit Scholarships?

Yes, National Merit finalists who are accepted, enroll, and name the University of Miami as their first choice may receive a $1,000 or $2,000 college-sponsored National Merit Award. $2,000 will be awarded only if the student has demonstrated financial need of at least $2,000.
