Admitted Transfer Student Checklist

The following roadmap will help guide you as you plan for your arrival in Miami. Please complete the items listed below by their respective dates, to ensure a smooth transition to life as a 'Cane.


Master Checklist


  1. Check your UM email daily.
  2. Confirm your contact information on CaneLink.
  3. Apply for on-campus housing, search for a roommate, and choose a meal plan.
  4. Register for ’Cane Kickoff through your CaneLink Account.
  5. Maybe you should just write “Register for CaneKickoff  through your CaneLink Account” and link them to CaneLink.
  6. Set up delegate/proxy access in CaneLink.
  7. *If entering the U.S. on an F-1 or J1 visa, scan a copy of your bank/government sponsorship letter and the first page of your passport.
  8. Complete financial assistance To-Do items in CaneLink.
  9. Follow school-specific instructions to complete your course registration.
  10. Take the ALEKS Math Placement Assessment, if applicable.
  11. If applicable, submit a request for disability accommodations.
  12. If your tuition is paid by a third-party sponsor, submit your Financial Guarantee Letter to the Office of Student Account Services.
  13. Starting January 2, complete the UMX online course.
  14. *If entering the U.S. on an F-1 or J-1 visa, pay the SEVIS fee and apply for a student visa.
  15. Submit your final high school transcript, AP and IB scores, and dual enrollment course credit. All exam scores must be sent directly from the appropriate testing agency. For AP, the University of Miami’s school code is 5815.
  16. Accept or waive University-sponsored health insurance.
  17. Consider purchasing a campus parking pass.
  18. Pay your tuition invoice.
  19. *If entering the U.S. on an F-1 or J-1 visa, familiarize yourself with U.S. entry procedures.
  20. If utilizing V.A. educational benefits, contact the VA Certifying Official.
  21. *International students, attend International Student Orientation.
  22. Complete Part 1 of “Think About It” UM’s Online Alcohol and Drug Education course.
  23. Participate in all five days of ’Cane Kickoff.
  24. Confirm you have arrived on campus.
  25. Complete health center immunizations.
