Does UM offer merit-based scholarships?

Yes. Merit-based scholarships range from $5,000 to full cost of attendance. UM awards merit-based scholarships to incoming undergraduate students based on their academic achievements regardless of their citizenship. The criteria for awarding scholarships are based on a comprehensive review of the applicant pool each year. There is no separate application required—applicants are automatically considered for an academic scholarship when they apply for admission to UM. To view our different academic scholarships, visit:

When will I hear if I’ve been awarded a merit-based scholarship?

Since you are automatically considered for merit-based scholarships, you will be notified if you received a scholarship with your electronic and mailed admission decision.

Will UM match other scholarships offered by another institution?

No, UM does not match offers made by other colleges/universities—but we congratulate you on your academic achievements that have provided so many wonderful opportunities.

If I receive a merit-based scholarship from the University of Miami, may I also receive need-based financial assistance?

Yes. A scholarship recipient may still qualify for need-based assistance; however, the merit scholarship is considered a resource and may affect financial need per federal regulations and University policy.  To apply for financial aid, complete and submit the required financial aid applications, the CSS/Financial Aid PROFILE, and the FAFSA, along with any supporting documents by the stated deadline.

May I use some of my merit scholarship funds to cover room and board expenses?

Mostly no. University of Miami merit scholarships cover tuition only. If you have other tuition-restricted funds such as the Florida Resident Access Grant or Tuition Remission, then the total of all these funds combined are limited to tuition and fee expenses only. Only a few select premier, full-cost-of-attendance scholarship programs (e.g., Stamps) may cover room and board.

I have received a merit scholarship. How do I accept it?

Congratulations! Be sure to complete the following steps to accept your award. Carefully review your scholarship agreement. Sign, scan, and send to the Office of Student Financial Assistance and Employment via fax to 305-284-4082 or email to mydocuments@miami.edu. If you email us, please put "Scholarship Agreement" in the subject line of your message. Please note that you must complete this agreement in order to receive the scholarship. Accepting your scholarship is not a binding commitment to attend UM.

Can I qualify for merit scholarships in subsequent years if I did not receive one as an incoming student?

No. Merit-based scholarships are offered only to incoming students. We encourage students to apply for outside scholarships for subsequent years. For more information, please visit our Additional Scholarship Resources page.

Is it possible to upgrade my scholarship after I start attending the University of Miami?

No. Once our scholarship decisions have been finalized, it is not possible for students to have their scholarships increased. If you find that your family’s financial circumstances have changed and additional financial assistance is needed, we recommend that you contact the Office of Student Financial Assistance and Employment to determine your eligibility for need-based financial assistance. In order to apply for need-based funds, you must complete and submit the CSS/Financial Aid PROFILE and the FAFSA.

I have been awarded a merit scholarship for the fall semester. If I decide not to attend immediately, defer to a future semester, or apply later as a transfer, will I still be eligible for this scholarship?

No, an awarded merit scholarship will not be held over or deferred to a later semester.
